We bought a 1970s house that still had all its original wallpaper, carpet, drapery, etc. While the 70s had its own kind of charm, we found the room was way too dark and not at all inviting. And since we really wanted to use this as a kids space we needed to brighten it up and add some space for toys and play things.

While we all love the idea of beautiful built-ins, sometimes they are just not in the budget. But we still want an organized, aesthetically pleasing, fun space for our kids to play, right? After a bit of research we found ideas we really liked and made it happen. Here is a great option for organizing your kids toys that doesn’t require renovating and remodeling your space and won’t break the bank.

A little reminder of the before from both angles. While you do not have to renovate your space, we did have to change the carpet and paint the walls, but a worthy price to pay to get rid of the shag. Afterwards we had a pretty blank space.

The budget did not allow us to add built-ins, so we looked into alternative ideas and found these storage bins on Amazon. After we measured the space we decided to go big and bought 2 cubes each with 8 cubes a piece.

Although the shelves by themselves are a good look, we wanted baskets for the lower half to put the small toys and odds and ends. out of sight out of mind. But, we kept the top half without baskets because we wanted to save money and also we had plenty of books and cute toys to display. These baskets are a little pricey but worth the money. We have had ours for five years and not one has broken! They are also collapsible which is a huge plus.

The last part of this cheap makeover were these ledge shelves. While we went with a neutral carpet and white walls, we wanted to bring some color and artwork into the space. What is more perfect than using children’s books as display art in your kids space? Not only is it beautiful but also something the kids will love to look at, pull down and enjoy.  We wanted them to span almost the entire length of the space so we went with two 56″ shelves for each row, 4 shelves in total. We used a level to keep them even when screwing them into the wall.

We love how the playroom turned out! All the toys fit into the shelves and baskets and the cleanup is so easy. All the small toys can be thrown into the baskets and tucked away for the next day of play. If you are looking to make a space for your kids to call their own,  but don’t want to spend too much this could be a great option for you!
