Dining Room Dreams

From A Multi-Purpose Room To A Dream Dining Space

This room has seen a lot of changes throughout it’s years. It started as a living space, but it sits adjacent to the over-sized family room, thus is was never used. Then, someone had the idea of changing it into a study of sorts, but the room was too big and it felt half-empty. Finally, someone in the family wanted a workout space so it was promptly changed into one. However, it is open to the main foyer and was a complete eye sore. Please see below for some before photos.

There you go. An unused living space, and then a workout room. Both of which scream early 2k. So when we came into the space, we needed to come up with a solution. Now, this is a beautiful white colonial home with over 5,000 square feet of living space. It was pretty important this room fit the grandness of the house. Also, with the owners having a large family it made sense to have a large dining room for entertaining. The current dining room could not fit the kind of table the owners needed. And with this room being right across from the kitchen… it was perfect.

Tile Purchase

The first thing we did was go out and choose the tile. We were looking for black and white, large format, slightly imperfect with a matte finish. We found the perfect tiles at The Home Depot. The white/cream time is Copley Bianco 24 in. x 24 in. Matte Porcelain Floor. It has some slight variation which we loved! And the black tile is Dominion Charcoal Black 23.62 in. x 23.62 in. Matte. Seriously, LOVE them.

Let's Talk Paint Color

It wasn’t too hard to choose. We wanted the color to fit the home and the room. There are so many whites to choose from, but we went with Alabaster by Sherwin Williams. We have used this color multiple times in the past and it never disappoints.

While white and bright and light was the goal, the room needed a little contrast. We decided to paint the doors in Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams. It made a huge difference and tied in with the tile perfectly.

Now that the painting was done, it was time to finish the backer board floor and start installing the tile! Please scroll down to see the tile installed because it has a WOW factor.

Lighting

Lighting is hard, but at the end of the day we chose something we thought the owners would like. In this case, while they love the traditional colonial style, they also loved wood accents. We didn’t really do wood but decided the lights could take on a “woodsy” look and make the space feel a little warmer and cozier.

We couldn’t find matching lights and sconces that we really liked so we bought them from two seperate places. First, the large 5 light chandelier is from Joss and Main. We loved the round shape, which added movement since everything else in the room is very uniform and square.

As for the sconces, we purchased them from Anthropologie. If you have never thought of looking at Anthropolgie for light fixtures than check it out. They have unique and beautiful pieces.

Seriously this room turned out incredible. I think a little artwork on the wall and maybe a bulked up mantle would make this place perfect. The small vase on the table is from Amazon. The other vase is an old old purchase, hence the crack through it. But I am obsessed with this vase for all its texture and roundness.
